Five Small Mistakes That Can Threaten Mobile Security

When you read about someone having their mobile identity stolen, you might think they must be an idiot for putting themselves at risk in the first place. But the truth of the matter is there are some very small mistakes one can make that can throw cell phone privacy into jeopardy. Here are a few to watch out for.

1. Relying on Auto Syncs
One of the convenient things about smart phones is how easy it is to sync them up to your computer, tablet or other mobile device. But with convenience comes danger, as auto-syncing between machines can lead to major headaches. For instance, imagine you keep a personal journal on your home laptop, which you have set to automatically sync with your phone. If you use that phone for business purposes, you could end up accidentally sharing a very private document with your colleagues, simply by hitting the wrong button.

2. Failure to Backup
If your mantra is "I'll do it tomorrow," then you could be putting your mobile security at risk. The requests to backup your phone's data may seem incessant, but they're very important. It typically only takes a couple of minutes to save your information to a backup drive, and you'll be happy you did should you lose or break your smart phone later on.

3. Aimless Clicking
Lots of people use their mobile device to browse the web, so it's important to remember that the same threats lurking on your computer's browser can also threaten your mobile privacy. Be wary of websites that look dubious, and consider installing a privacy app to warn you of potentially harmful links.

4. Basic Business Mistakes
If you use your phone for both business and personal reasons, you must do everything in your power to keep the two separate. Install a second cell phone number on your device and use separate browsers if possible.

5. Going Public
You may be used to using your phone to keep busy while waiting for the bus or riding the subway, but remember that there may be thieves lurking around the corner just waiting to snatch your cell right out of your hands. Please, when using your device in public, be discreet.

When you boil it down, the best way to avoid simple mistakes is by playing it safe with your mobile phone, no matter how you are using it.
